How Real Estate Agents Use Domains to Sell Houses…

Selling a house is a big deal. It’s usually the largest purchase people make, so it makes sense that real estate agents go the extra mile when it comes to marketing a house. One way agents are doing this is by registering a unique domain name and creating a website (or forwarding to an existing page on their site) for each house they sell.

Even if you aren’t a real estate agent, consider how you can use multiple domain names to help market your company.

A Growing Trend

I recently received a magazine promoting 100 high-end homes ($1 million and up) for sale. Of those, 78 homes had their own unique domain name and website in the listing.

Compare this to two years ago when only 54% of the homes in the same magazine listed a unique web address.

You might even notice this as you drive around your neighborhood. More and more “For Sale” signs have a domain name unique to the home, not just the real estate agent or company.

Agents don’t have to set up a completely new hosting account for each domain name. The simplest way to use a unique domain to sell a home or product is to forward it to a page on your website about the product. For example, an agent might forward a domain name to the listing page for the house within his or her website.

Types of Domains

Websites for homes typically use either a street address domain or a descriptive domain.

Street address domain names take the form of 123SomeplaceDrive.com. The nice thing about these domains is that most street addresses are fairly unique, so it’s easy to register the domain name in .com.

Descriptive domain names usually describe the neighborhood or a characteristic of the house, such as RivercrestWaterfront.com. Even if the first option has been taken, you can usually find another phrase that’s available as a .com domain name.

How Can You Use Unique Domains in Your Business?

You don’t have to be a real estate agent to benefit from registering multiple domains. Think about ways your company can register domain names to use in marketing:

  • Neighborhood names in your city to promote your services hyper-locally.
  • Unique domain names for each of your store locations
  • A .TV or .Video domain to point to your YouTube channel

With these domains, you can use them as standalone websites or microsites, or you can register the domains and then forward them to your primary domain.
